Senior International Materials Engineer
Job Overview
Responsible for the technical execution of international materials and supplier development initiatives, translating requirements, standards and operational needs into clear specifications and tangible results in a global environment.
Act as the main technical bridge between Engineering, Procurement, International Office (China) and suppliers, with a clear focus on TCO and PPV reduction, validated savings, asset reliability and availability for Rail and Ports & Terminals.
Reporting & Governance
• Direct report: Head of International Office (China)
• Matrix report: Engineering – HQ
• Location: Shanghai, China | Working languages: English and Portuguese
• Technical governance: Requirements and validations defined by HQ Engineering; supplier execution and development led by the engineer.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Execution – Materials (Rail and Ports & Terminals)
• Translate performance, reliability, environmental and failure history requirements into actionable specifications for international suppliers.
• Work with critical materials and components (steels, castings/forgings, machined parts, welding, thermal/surface treatments, polymers/composites, electromechanical systems and subassemblies) for rolling stock, fixed infrastructure, yards and port equipment (cranes, conveyors, gearboxes, bearings, motors, cables, rails and accessories).
• Define and approve control plans, acceptance criteria and process requirements.
2. Supplier Development, Inspection & Quality
• Conduct technical approvals and qualifications (approvals, audits, process reviews, pilots) and development plans with performance targets.
• Establish inspection criteria and routines for FAT / Pre‑Shipment / SAT, ensuring material conformity, welding process and integrity, welding criteria, hardness, microstructure and service life through proper technical verification and quality controls.
• Lead structured root cause analysis and drive implementation of effective corrective actions to permanently eliminate deviations.
3. Documentation & Standards
• Review and maintain drawings, specifications and dossiers in English, ensuring configuration control and traceability.
• Ensure compliance and cross‑reference between ABNT, AAR, AREMA, ISO, IEC, EN, IRIS and internal requirements.
4. Governance, KPIs & Monetization (Money Maker)
• Deliver savings (CAPEX/OPEX), reduce TCO and PPV, accelerate time to approve and time to value.
• Monitor critical performance indicators such as quality, reliability, approval lead times, logistics performance and supplier portfolio evolution, ensuring continuous improvement and direct impact on availability and TCO.
• Support the International PMO on prioritization and cadence (gate reviews) with data‑driven decisions.
5. Future Vision – Ports & Terminals
• Propose technological evolution guidelines for ports and terminals, including automation, equipment electrification, digital integration, predictive monitoring solutions, standardization and modularization initiatives.
• Integrate sustainability and LCC (Life Cycle Cost) into materials and project decisions.
Profile & Qualifications
• Education: Mechanical, Metallurgical, Materials, Electrical/Electronic, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or related fields.
• Experience: Heavy industries (railways, ports & terminals, logistics, mining, steel), focused on materials, manufacturing processes (casting, forging, machining, welding, thermal/surface treatments) and quality.
• Technical‑commercial profile with strong ability to connect engineering and business: proficient in cost analysis, design optimization and quality tools (should‑cost, VA/VE, Design‑to‑Cost, FMEAs, GD&T, statistical analysis), combined with supplier negotiation skills, ability to interpret drawings and specifications, and drive TCO‑reducing, value‑adding solutions (money maker).
• Standards: Knowledge of ABNT, AAR, AREMA, ISO, IEC, EN, IRIS (and port/terminal related standards).
• Languages: Advanced Portuguese; fluent English; Mandarin desirable.
• Soft Skills: Technical influence, negotiation, executive communication, ownership and results orientation.
• Mobility: Based in Shanghai (or region), available to travel to plants and ports/terminals.
